Spencer was born and raised in southern Utah. His earliest memories are of exploring the surrounding desert in an old Ford Ranger, which created a lasting relationship with the landscape. This lead to the landscape being the sole focus of his artistic pursuit. His inspiration comes from artists of the past and includes Isaac Levitan, Ivan Shishkin , and Henri Fantin-Latour.
