Spencer was born and raised in southern Utah. His earliest memories are of exploring the surrounding desert in an old ford ranger, which created a lasting relationship with the landscape. This lead to the landscape being the sole focus of his artistic pursuit. By awarded scholarships Spencer was able to pursue a diverse range of artistic training from laguna college of art and design in California to the Lyme academy in Connecticut and many personal mentorship’s in between. He is most influenced however by artists of the past such as Isaac Levitan, Joaquin sollora, and John Singer Sargent. In his paintings he strives to represent the landscape accurately in the way it is seen and in the way it is felt. Searching for scenes that have emotional resonance, he believes a painting can be tuned to match the same chords that are played in a human heart when it encounters beauty.
